This page includes data from the Wisconsin Bureau of Justice Information and Analysis that provide two perspectives on personal safety. The domestic abuse rate is based on the number of incidents of domestic abuse reported to law enforcement and referred to the district attorney. Domestic abuse refers to acts engaged in by an adult against his or her spouse, former spouse, another adult with whom the person resides or formerly resided, or another adult with whom the person has a child in common. Such acts are defined as intentional infliction of physical pain, injury, or illness; intentional impairment of physical condition; sexual assault; or a physical act that causes reasonable fear that any of these actions will occur. The sexual assault rate is based on the number of sexual assaults reported to law enforcement. Sexual assault includes rape, attempts or assaults to commit rape, statutory rape, and groping.
