8.03 Public Libraries

This page includes data from the Institute of Museum and Library Services on public libraries. Visits include all people entering the library for whatever purpose during the year. Circulation includes all library materials in print, electronic, or other format that are charged out for use outside the library. Operating expenditures include salaries and wages, employee benefits, collection expenditures, and other expenditures necessary to support the provision of library services. Attendance includes the audience at all planned group events, whether held on- or off-site, that are sponsored or co-sponsored by the library. Circulation includes renewals but does not include items checked out to another library. Program attendance does not include programs sponsored by other groups that use library facilities or library activities delivered on a one-to-one basis. County-level data are aggregated from data at the public library agency level based on the county in which the headquarters of the agency is physically located.
